Diagnosis: FM Doesn't Work

The tuner cannot receive FM stations or receives them poorly.

Safe first checks

  1. Confirm an FM antenna is connected to the correct terminals.
  2. Try a known working antenna or a different location.
  3. Check whether AM works; that helps separate an antenna problem from a broader tuner fault.
  4. Do not adjust tuner coils or alignment trimmers without the proper equipment and service manual.

Next step

Record whether the signal meter moves and whether stereo reception ever appears.

Bench Technician Steps

This is the model of work a qualified electronics technician follows using the exact service manual and suitable test equipment. It is not a do-it-yourself instruction to work on energized equipment.

  1. Verify the antenna input, band switching, dial or display drive, and related power supplies before assuming an alignment problem.
  2. Use the service manual and proper RF test equipment for tuner alignment; internal coils and trimmers should not be adjusted by trial and error.
  3. Document signal-meter behavior, stereo decoding behavior, and differences between bands to narrow the circuit area.
